Three Toed Sloth 🦥

I find it really interesting to write about this animal because it’s very common in my country, but whenever I talk about it, people usually have more questions than I can answer. One of my favorite animals is the sloth. Although Costa Rica officially has national animals like the white tailed deer and the clay colored thrush, the sloth is even more popular and has unofficially become the country’s most iconic animal
The most common species, and the one you can often spot in the trees, is the three toed sloth, specifically the brown throated three toed sloth. It has an adorable face and is friendlier looking than its two toed relative. But what really catches my attention is how slow it is... incredibly slow
It’s so slow that:
- it has moss and insects living in its fur because it barely moves
- it only comes down from the tree at specific times, one of them being to poop, which it does once a week
- it often goes unnoticed

People love it so much that you can find it on the ¢10000 bill (~20€). Most of the country’s tourism ads feature a sloth character, and it even got its own emoji 🦥 in 2019
A special mention goes to sloth characters in movies like Sid from Ice Age and Flash Slothmore from Zootopia
